What Are Pipe Racks and What Are They Used For?

Pipe racks are steel structures designed to support the pipes, cable trays, and power cables used in an industrial plant. A pipe rack can also be used to support mechanical equipment, vessels, and platforms that make access to valves easier and safer.

In addition to physically supporting piping systems, these structures play an important role in improving the efficiency and maintainability of an industrial plant, helping reduce operational issues and overall management costs.

In this article, we will look at what pipe racks are used for, how they are designed, and the main types commonly found in industrial plants.

How Pipe Racks Are Built and What They Are Used For

Pipe racks help make industrial plants safer while optimizing the available space. They can be used both inside and outside the facility and are generally made of elevated beams that support the pipes through which liquid or gaseous substances flow.

Their use makes it possible to recover valuable space within an industrial plant. Pipe racks can be positioned above machinery and equipment, freeing up floor space and helping organize the plant layout more efficiently. These structures may also include internal inspection walkways that allow technicians and maintenance personnel to move safely along the rack. These walkways are usually made of welded grating and often include vertical ladders for safe access at height.

There are different types of pipe rack, depending on the characteristics of the plant where they are used. Some are designed to maximize strength and durability in particularly demanding environments, using materials capable of withstanding heavy loads and harsh operating conditions. Others prioritize accessibility and modularity, making frequent maintenance and future modifications easier.

Modular pipe racks are a good example. These support systems are designed to integrate with existing structures and allow easier, more flexible installation. They are made of pre-assembled sections that can be reconfigured to meet new production requirements in the industrial plant.

Pipe racks can therefore be considered the backbone of a plant’s infrastructure. Their function is not limited to supporting pipes: they also help organize and distribute electrical cables and other essential services. They are also designed to provide safe and practical access for operators, making inspections, maintenance activities, and, when necessary, pipe replacement faster and more efficient. This helps minimize plant downtime.

For these reasons, 3D pipe support design software, such as ESAPRO Supports, includes dedicated features that allow engineers and designers to create piping supports using pipe racks. The software also includes a module for quickly creating steel structures, with specific tools for the automatic generation of pipe racks, brackets, columns, base plates, handrails, platforms, and ladders.

These structures therefore help optimize workflows, support operational requirements, and protect the long-term safety and efficiency of the entire industrial plant.

Pipe Rack Design

Pipe rack design is a detailed, multidisciplinary process that combines structural, mechanical, and process engineering within a functional system. It requires planning and coordination among all the professionals involved in the different phases of plant design: from the creation of the process diagram, or P&ID, to the 3D modeling of piping lines and power cables.

By using 3D piping software, it is possible to check that the main recommended positioning criteria are respected. These criteria may include the need to separate temperature-sensitive lines from high-temperature or refrigerated lines, as well as the choice of the most suitable elevation levels for the different types of pipes included in the plant. ESAPRO 3D Piping, for example, includes dedicated commands for the design of steel structures. These fast and intuitive tools allow designers to quickly model walkways, beams, posts, handrails, and other structural elements.

There are also dedicated software solutions on the market for detailed steel structure design and structural analysis, such as Tekla and Autodesk Advance Steel. Racks modeled with these applications can be imported into ESAPRO 3D Piping and ESAPRO Cable Trays, so that piping systems and electrical cable trays can be modeled directly on top of them.

Every decision, from the construction material to the arrangement of the piping, is influenced by a careful assessment of risks and performance. The goal is to ensure that the structure can support the required loads and withstand potential stresses.

The position of pipe racks within an industrial plant may also vary depending on how they are integrated into the overall layout. They may be part of a central process unit or be placed in a secondary area connecting different process units. For this reason, during pipe rack design, it is necessary to study the piping and instrumentation diagrams, the plant layout, the piping plot plan, and the fireproofing requirements associated with the materials used.
